Visualizing Anxiety (2017)

Anxiety is a topic pertinent to many people, having previously experienced an attack myself, this topic became of interest to me when I decided to explore converting those feelings into something tangible – to visualize them. And so, with this in mind I wanted to create a series of illustrations that would describe what anxiety felt like to me. I intended to create the illustrations based largely off of my feelings.

"A picture is worth a thousand words."

When experiencing this emotion I found it difficult to use words to rationalize the thoughts and feelings racing across my mind, and so decided to express them through art. These illustrations were meant to depict those feelings literally and graphically – to explain the extent of their effects on me.

I run and run down this spiral staircase that takes me into an un-ending darkness.

The words that pierce my heart, hold me in place, and burn my neck.

Walking around with all my masks, wanting to tear them off. I can never be enough.

Waiting patiently as I fake this smile and have my heart crushed.

Paralyzed from everything together, I lay in fetal position.

Sketch _ 4

Sketch _ 4

This was a random illustration based on a number of features from a number of faces I liked. I tried to go for a realistic feel with this one.

Sketch _ 5

Sketch _ 5

Another illustration created when I just felt like I needed to draw a still image and not animate! This is just a face from within my mind.

Hand _ 1

Hand _ 1

I had originally intended to make a series of hands holding on to seemingly meaningless objects, just as encouragement to people to hold on to anything they can and not give up.

Don't Hurt Me

Don't Hurt Me

This was intended to be a series as well. I wanted to use words that people have used to hurt me and illustrate those as a means of catharsis and reminding myself of how I've grown since the time those words were uttered!
